Just east of Shockoe Slip and the Business District, along the James River is Shockoe Bottom. This area was mapped in Colonel William Mayo’s 1737 plan of Richmond, making it one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Historically, this was the site of key tobacco industry structures, such as the public warehouse, tobacco scales, and the Federal Customs Houses in the district.
