Originally named City Point, Hopewell was founded to take advantage of its site overlooking the James and Appomattox Rivers. The oldest part of Hopewell was established in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. Because of its place on the mouth of the two rivers, many industrial businesses were able to build plants and factories along the river. This led to a bustling town still seen today. A popular choice for locals is the historic Beacon Theatre that features concerts and comedy shows. Beautiful parks and a marina overlooking the wide reiverfront are also popular attractions. That, along with local bakeries, restaurants, and shops lend to the friendly and neighborhood feel of Hopewell.
