Shockoe Bottom
Just east of Shockoe Slip and the Business District, along the James River is Shockoe Bottom. This area was mapped in Colonel William Mayo’s 1737 plan of Richmond, making it one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Historically, this was the site of key tobacco industry structures, such as the public warehouse, tobacco scales, and the Federal Customs Houses in the district. Those tobacco warehouses are now home to loft style apartments, breweries, trendy restaurants, bars and shops. Steps to the Canal Walk Greenway and the Virginia Capital Trail, both along the James River, it is ideal for those who love the outdoors as much as their convenient city lifestyle. It’s also a short walk to Brown’s Island, perfect for the summer concert series, or for those who enjoy rock climbing, kayaking and paddle boarding or just need a refreshing dip in the River on one of Richmond’s hot summer days!
