Located on the south bank of the James River, Manchester or ‘Old Town Manchester’ the area grew to become a major seaport in the 17th through 19th centuries, as did its neighbor Richmond on the north bank of the river. Both were located at the head of navigation of the tidal James River at the geological fall line. It is known colloquially as ‘Dogtown’ for the dog head shape of the city streets in the area. Modern Manchester is seen as an extension of downtown, featuring its own tight knit neighborhood full of breweries, restaurants, cafes, markets and homes. Between the Floodwall Walk, Buttermilk Trail, Manchester Climbing Wall and quick access to the James River, it is popular among urban dwellers with a penchant for the outdoors.
